Johanna O. Zulueta

Short Profile

Johanna O. Zulueta is a Professor of Sociology at Toyo University in Tokyo, Japan. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Hitotsubashi University and has an extensive academic background in migration studies, transnationalism, and human rights. Her research focuses on the experiences of migrant communities in Japan and Southeast Asia, with particular attention to issues of identity, belonging, and social integration. Prof. Zulueta is the author of Transnational Identities on Okinawa’s Military Bases: Invisible Armies (2020), Okinawan Women’s Stories of Migration From War Brides to Issei (2022). She has also edited several books, including Handbook of Transnational Families Around the World: Entangled inequalities, gender roles and new actors on the global scale(2023) and Women and COVID-19 : a clinical and applied sociological focus on family, work and community (2024).
