Karl Ian Uy CHENG CHUA is assistant professor of the Asian Center, University of the
Philippines – Diliman. His main research interests are looking at historical and
contemporary representations of foreigners in manga and komiks. He is the Editor-in-
Chief of Social Science Diliman, and serves as part of the editorial board of the East
Asian Journal of Popular Culture. He is one of the Philippine Steering Committee
Members of the Japanese Studies Association of Southeast Asia (JSA-ASEAN).
